We couldn’t agree more with Visit Blackpool when they say ‘Blackpool is back’ and, after what seems like the longest ever year, we’re all getting back into the swing of things. On that basis – and to prove our point – here are a few ideas of things to see and do with our guide to Blackpool events in 2021.
1. Late Night Riding at the Pleasure Beach
You can now get your adrenalin fix late into the night, with rides open until 10pm. Try the Big Dipper or the newest coaster, ICON, at twilight, for a truly magical experience. Late Night Riding events are scheduled throughout the year, taking place on July 24 and 31, August 7, 14, 21 and 28, September 25 and October 23 and 31. Book your e-tickets at https://www.blackpoolpleasurebeach.com/
2. Take a traditional tram ride along the coast
A tram ride offers a relaxed and comfortable way to be a true Blackpool tourist for the day. As a special treat, original and restored Heritage Trams will operate over the August Bank Holiday and on weekends during the Illuminations, providing a really unforgettable experience.
3. World Fireworks Championships 2021 (Dates TBC)
Gathering together the crème de la crème of the world’s firework elite in September, this event promises to be a mouth-watering series of pyrotechnic shows, with jaw-dropping entertainment for the whole family. Best of all, it’s free!
4: Art and Galleries
If art is your passion then there are numerous art installations and galleries to visit, as highlighted in our special guide to the various art installations you can see on Blackpool seafront. Alternatively, visit a gallery such as https://www.thegrundy.org, which regularly hosts exhibitions.
5: Grand at The Grand
If you love live performance, then a visit to The Grand Theatre is a must, as you can enjoy everything from musicals to comedy. The architectural elegance of this building is reason alone to visit, with this magnificent 4-level auditorium designed by the renowned architect, Frank Matcham. The Grand has a full programme of shows lined up, featuring the likes of the comedy genius, Alan Carr, the inspiring Yorkshire Shepherdess, Amanda Owen, and a spooky adaption of the ghost story, The Woman in Black.
6. Ice Spectacular
The Hot Ice 2021 show returns to Blackpool Pleasure Beach with Euphoria! Opening on July 8 and running through to September, Hot Ice is the world’s longest running ice show and Euphoria promises to be a fast-moving live performance that will have you on the edge of your seat. Think amazing costumes, world-class skating, beautiful music, and dramatic lighting and you’ve got it in one!
7. Blackpool Illuminations
We have to, of course mention, Blackpool Illuminations – the greatest free light show on earth and a magical experience for all the family! Shining bright from September 3, 2021 to January 3, 2022, there’s there’s every opportunity to see them.
The award-winning Lightpool Festival will also return for October half-term, with this being a fun and free mixture of light installations, 3D projection shows, art trails and live performances. Check out Visit Blackpool’s website for more details, as they are announced.
8. ‘Six’ Smash Hit Musical
If musicals are your thing, you’ll be pleased to hear that the international smash hit musical, Six, is coming to the Winter Gardens in July, as part of its UK tour. From Tudor Queens to Pop Princesses, the six wives of Henry VIII take to the mic to tell their tales, remixing five hundred years of historical heartbreak into an 80-minute celebration of 21st century girl power. It’s had rave reviews and is not to be missed.
9. Christmas in Blackpool
If you’re planning a festive trip to Blackpool and you’re a fan of the show ‘Friends’, you’re in for a treat. Friends Festive will arrive at Blackpool Winter Gardens from November 5 to 19, with a digital snow globe photo opportunity, Holiday Armadillo’s Grotto and a chance to check out Monica’s apartment, plus themed food stalls and Christmas cocktails.
10. Walk a Roller coaster
Do you have a head for heights? For something a little different, you can ‘Walk the Woodie’. This unique experience gives roller coaster fans a chance to walk up and down the boards of the classic wooden roller coaster, The Big Dipper. With some amazing photo opportunities along the way (just think of those incredible views) you’ll also get a unique insight into how this wonderful ride is maintained.
